In traditional Javanese and Balinese puppet theatre, the Kayonan is an important wayang; or shadow puppet. These dramatic stories depict mythologies, such as episodes from the Hindu epics of the Ramayana, the Mahabharata as well as local adaptations of cultural legends. In these performances, the Kayonan wayang symbolizes the Earth or nature and all of its contents. In Balinese wayang shadow theatre the Kayonan is the first and last puppet seen on stage. As it dances it symbolizes this living tradition of storytelling that deeply explains and entertains, morally educates and brings communities together. Since the Kayonan is present at the beginning and end of the story, it also represents change and transformation. Based on its multifaceted symbolic meaning Kayonan was carefully chosen as the company name because of the deep meaning it embodies and for what it symbolizes. Kayonan is in the business of creating the change and transformation that will lead to more conscious ways of thinking and living that are more holistically integrated.
